Here's the skinny on Tom's leg: he was riding his bike, skidding out to make black marks on the pavement, and something went horribly awry. Whether the pedal took out his leg or the frame of the bike hit him on the way down we don't know, but Tom broke his tibia (the load-bearing bone in his shin.) He has a temporary cast on right now, until Thursday when we go to the pediatric orthopaedic specialist for a permanent cast. I'm hoping that doctor will tell us how long this has to be on, but already two days later he's doing so much better that I can't imagine it'll take long.
Ok, on to the pictures! Will's birthday involved tobogganing, riding the ice slides downtown, and cake!
His birthday gift: the marble run. This is, I think, the best toy we have. It entertains both kids (although Tom is more of the marble run engineer.)
Here's my handsome Tom, and Tom hugging Will. There was no prompting for the hug - it was the first spontaneous hug between these two that I've ever seen!
Will, being delightful, as usual.
Our trip to Prince Edward County during maple syrup season.
Will launching from the bench in the kitchen. Hmmm, maybe this should have been a sign that our kids were destined for broken bones?
A spring walk on one of the first decent days of spring.
Tom and his dad ignoring the sign's advice. Perhaps another sign that a broken leg was inevitable?
Learning about moss.
Tom was quick to ditch his training wheels. The run bike prepared him for his pedal bike! Here he is on his first day of riding this season.
And Will has happily inherited the run bike from Tom. He's got the balance down pat!
Moving on to Tom's birthday! I can't believe how big he's getting.
Will is all set to ride the motorcycle.
And here's poor Tom, not at all happy about having a cast. He cries a lot about the injustice of it all.
But he brightened up a bit when his dad found him a wheel chair and Tom realized he could get around the house a little bit on his own. In this picture he's enjoying a close game of battleship with his dad!
